Tonight’s Study, Session 1: Introduction to the 3 P’s: The Practice, Power, and Promise of Prayer Series

Introduction: For the next 11 weeks, we will learn about the 3P’s: the practice, power, and promise of prayer. We will focus mainly on answering the why, how, and who questions about prayer. Along with answering the why, how, and who questions about prayer, we will discover that prayer is a real conversation with God in practice, highlighting its life-changing power, and look at God’s faithful promises to listen and answer.

A Preview of the next 11 weeks

Why pray?

Many ask the question, “Why pray if God already knows what we are going to pray for anyway?” There are various reasons why we should pray to God. The obvious is that God commands us to. In this study, we will see that prayer is as necessary as breathing and a vital lifeline for a believer.

What is the proper way to pray?

In this study, we will see that prayer is not some magical formula. Some believe that if we do not say exactly the right things, or pray in the right posture or position, God will not hear and answer our prayers. This is completely unbiblical.

How can I be sure I am praying according to the will of God?

Man’s highest aim should be to bring glory to God, and this includes praying according to His will. In this study we will look at seven Biblical instructions that will guide us as believers in praying according to God’s will.

What are some hindrances to a powerful prayer life?

Many times, it seems that our prayers are powerless and go unanswered. Why aren’t my prayers being answered? Sometimes the obvious hindrance is overlooked, which is the presence of unconfessed sin. We will also discover other hindrances to a powerful prayer life in this study.

What should I do when God says no?

We love the truth that God answers prayer. But what we love most is when He agrees with our requests and says “yes.” But sometimes God’s answer is “no” or “not yet.”  If we believe that God is a good Father and wants what is best for us, the “no” or “not yet” answer becomes easier for us to accept. This study will help us see that “no” or “not yet” isn’t always bad, but many times a blessing.

What does it mean to be still before God in prayer?

Our world is in constant motion, moving along at supersonic pace. We, even as believers can get caught up in the frenzy and find ourselves viewing prayer in the same way. Prayer is to be a respite from the vicious cycle of the never-ending motion of a busy life. Christians who neglect spending uninterrupted time being still before God in prayer are missing out on a tremendous blessing. Lets all try to be still before God and learn more of what it means to be still before God in prayer.

What does it mean to pray without ceasing?

The apostle Paul’s command in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to “pray without ceasing,” can be confusing. Obviously, it cannot mean we are to be in a head-bowed, eyes closed posture all day long. Instead, it means that every waking moment is to be lived in an awareness that God is in us and that He is actively involved and engaged in our thoughts and actions. This study will enlighten us to the attitude of always being ready to pray in all occasions and circumstances.

How can I know what to pray for?

From the Old Testament to the New, God commands people to pray. When we’re facing a crisis, we have no trouble knowing what to pray for. At other times, we know we should pray, but we’re not sure what to pray about. This prayer study will help us develop a keen sense of knowing what God would have us pray for as we obey His command to pray and are led by the Holy Spirit.

Why pray specifically?

It is easy to prayer in a general way, such as “God be with so and so” or to “pray for everything around the world” except the specific thing that should be prayed for. Specific prayer takes discipline and time, which, unfortunately, many Christians don’t want to commit to. This study will show us the importance and power, along with the promise of specific prayer.

How can I stop being nervous about praying publicly?

Many Christians find praying publicly or in a group to be a daunting prospect. Public speaking of any kind is one of the greatest fears experienced by people. Public prayer adds the extra pressure of the spiritual aspect and makes people even more nervous. This study will unveil the many ways a believer in Christ can get past their fear of praying publicly.

How should we pray for unbelievers?

How do we pray for the lost? We can learn to pray for unbelievers by modeling the prayers Jesus prayed. God has a heart for the lost and sent His Son Jesus to earth to be born, live a perfect life, go to Calvary’s cross to die for the sins of the world, and then raised Him on the third day. This study will help develop in us a heart like God has for the unsaved and a burden and desire to pray for their salvation.
